Hi, I’m Paul — an artist and maker passionate about creating meaningful, one-of-a-kind work.
I specialize in expressive watercolour painting, where I capture wildlife, nature, and the everyday with light, colour, and movement. I also create custom pet portraits that bring your furry (or feathered!) companions to life in a timeless, painterly style. Beyond painting, I handcraft picture frames from raw lumber, building each frame to complement the artwork it holds. My work combines fine-art tradition with craftsmanship, offering collectors and pet lovers unique pieces that are personal, heartfelt, and built to last.
I have been painting and drawing for as long as I can remember. By 14 I had built my own darkroom, by 15 I was working as a professional photographer, and by 22 I had opened a fashion photography studio in Toronto. Later, I held an executive position at The Globe and Mail, Canada’s national newspaper, where I combined creativity with strategic vision.
Today, my focus is on fine art. I work in both watercolour and digital painting, two mediums that allow me to express different sides of my creativity. My watercolour style is loose, fluid, and constantly evolving, capturing the movement of light, colour, and nature. My digital painting style draws inspiration from the old masters, including Caravaggio, combining depth, warmth, and lifelike detail with expressive brushwork. Together, these practices shape a body of work that is both timeless and contemporary.
I specialize in custom pet portraits that capture the personality and spirit of each animal, alongside wildlife watercolour paintings and commissioned works. Beyond painting, I design and build handmade picture frames, crafted from raw lumber, so every artwork is presented in a frame as unique as the piece itself.
When I’m not at the easel or in the workshop, I work as a designer and motion graphics artist, producing branding, illustrations, and animations for not-for-profits, cultural organizations, and independent businesses. The same eye for craft, colour, and composition that guides my paintings drives my design practice.
Teaching is also at the heart of what I do. I’ve developed my own line of handmade watercolour paint, taught over 200 in-person classes, and now share both watercolour lessons and digital painting tutorials online. These classes give students the tools to explore their own creativity while learning professional techniques.
Two meaningful sabbaticals have deeply shaped my career. In the first, I volunteered with Catalyst Plus, teaching digital media in developing countries and working directly with coffee growers, chocolate producers, and mango farmers to help them tell their stories visually. In the second, I sailed solo from the Caribbean to Annapolis — a journey that tested my resilience, adaptability, and ability to make fast decisions under pressure.
Through it all, my passion has remained the same: creating and sharing art. Whether it’s a commissioned pet portrait, a wildlife watercolour painting, a digital old-masters portrait, or a handcrafted frame, my work is about capturing character, beauty, and emotion in a way that lasts.
